Canstruction 2020 calling for entries
As the holiday season winds to a close, organizers of the international Canstruction fundraiser are calling for teams of architects, engineers, contractors and students to put on their thinking caps.
Held annually in more than 100 cities worldwide, Canstruction invites teams of volunteers to create gigantic structures made entirely out of non-perishable food items. The events are judged locally, and the best local winners go on to be judged in a best-in-show international Canstruction competition to determine winners in such categories as best original design, most cans used, structural ingenuity and best meal.
More than 1,000 teams participated in Canstruction worldwide in 2019, and all the food used in the preparation of the structures was donated to local food banks.
Here in Ontario, four Canstruction events are planned for 2020.
- The event in Waterloo will be held at the Conestoga Mall, and runs from March 14 to 21. This year’s registration deadline is December 31. Proceeds from the event go to support The Food Bank of Waterloo Region, and teams can learn more at www.thefoodbank.ca.
- Windsor’s event runs from March 20 to 26 at the Devonshire Mall. Proceeds to go support the Windsor Essex Food Bank Association, and more information is available by emailing werotaract519@gmail.com.
- Canstruction 2020 takes place in Sault Ste. Marie from April 25 to May 8 at the Station Mall. Proceeds will support United Way of Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma District, and teams can register for the event by contacting Shane Rock at srock@uwssmalgoma.ca.
- Finally, Toronto’s event will take place at TD Centre from June 1 to 7. Event information is available on the group’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/canstructionTO, and proceeds go to support Daily Bread Food Bank. Last year’s Canstruction Toronto event raised nearly 69,000 pounds of goods.
Since 1992, Canstruction has raised nearly 82 million pounds of food for hunger relief organizations.
