Three construction firms among Canada’s Top 100 Employers
PCL Construction, Modern Niagara Group and Mattamy Homes have been named among the 2020 winners of Canada’s Top 100 Employers.
The results of the competition, which rewards those employers for creating exceptional working environments, were announced on November 22 in Toronto.
This year marks the eleventh in a row in which PCL Construction has been named one of the country’s top employers. The company is known for its challenging and exciting work, strong teams, and employee-ownership program. It also offers a series of industry-leading benefits for employees, including learning and development opportunities provided through the PCL College of Construction and PCL Leadership Academy, and a commitment to wealth and wellness through onsite fitness classes and annual fitness credits.
“Our entrepreneurial spirit helps drive the PCL culture,” says Mike Olsson, vice-president of human resources and professional development. “We build people, communities and legacies, and we’re honoured to be recognized for our commitment to building one of the best workplaces in the country.”
This is the second year in a row in which Mattamy Homes has earned the Top 100 distinction. The awards selection committee identified a series of reasons for the award, including the support it offers to new mothers and fathers in the form of maternity and parental leave top-ups, an employee home ownership program that offers a cash payment to 4.5 percent of the purchase price of a company-built home, and volunteer grants of up to $500 annually for those employees who offer their time to charitable organizations in their communities.
"Being named as one of Canada's Top Employers is a momentous achievement," says CEO Brad Carr. "It's a true testament to the kind of company and culture that Mattamy employees have built together. It's also an opportunity for us to look forward to the exciting future we have ahead, one that continues to include being an employer of choice "
"To be recognized for the second year is a real honour and will help us to continue to attract more great talent to the organization," said Carr. "We're all very proud of this incredible success, as everyone across the organization has played a role in making Mattamy a best-in-class workplace!"
This is also the second year in a row in which Modern Niagara Group has been named among the country’s best employers. The contractor specializes in mechanical electrical, building controls and building services. It was recognized for a number of contributing factors, including its corporate retirement planning assistance services and pension plans, its parental leave top-up program for new parents, and its social activities, events and fundraisers.
“This prestigious honour is thanks solely to our greatest asset – our employees,” says Modern Niagara chief operating officer Chris Hill. “Each and every one of our employees represents an invaluable thread in the fabric that makes up Modern Niagara with its rich history and exceptional culture. Each employee displays their teamwork, passion, determination, initiative and professionalism every day, allowing us to become a contractor that our clients can truly count on.”
Celebrating 20 years
The Canada's Top 100 Employers competition marks its 20th anniversary this year. It is an editorial project managed by Mediacorp that recognizes employers with exceptional human resources programs and forward-thinking workplace policies. Program editors assess employers on the following criteria: physical workplace; work atmosphere and communications; financial benefits and compensation; health and family-friendly benefits; vacation and personal time-off; employee engagement and performance; training and skills development; and community involvement.
"The project's enduring appeal owes much to the dramatic changes shaping Canadian society and our place in the world," says publisher Anthony Meehan. "Technology and globalization have changed the nature of employment and have accelerated the pace at which organizations rise and fall – you need to attract talented employees more than ever to make sure your organization is the one driving change, not the one being driven out by new competitors. Add to this Canada's ageing workforce and the declining share of young people entering the workforce and the result is a 'perfect storm' for employers trying to stay ahead."
This year saw the largest number of employers to date take part in the selection process, examining the recruitment histories of 100,000 employers. From that pool, the editors invited 10,000 employers to submit detailed applications, including a comprehensive review of their operations and HR practices that compares them to others in their industry and region.
