Dundas concrete company fined $90K for OHSA violation
A Dundas producer of pre-stressed concrete products has been fined $90,000 for its role in an accident that led to a worker’s injuries.
Coreslab Structures Inc. pled guilty in provincial offences court in Hamilton to charges relating to a violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations. The company will pay the fine, plus a 25-percent victim fine surcharge that is used to assist victims of crime.
The incident occurred in August 2018 at the company’s plant on Coreslab Drive in Dundas.
A worker was attempting to operate a shear machine to cut rebar. The worker lifted a shield to hold the rebar in position. When the worker activated the shear machine a clamp closed, resulting in injuries.
Section 25 of the Industrial Establishment Regulation requires an in-running nip hazard or any part of a machine that may endanger the safety of any worker to be equipped with and guarded by a guard or other device that prevents access to the pinch point.
An investigation found that Coreslab had failed to ensure such measures were in place.
