At year’s end, there were 52 projects with a combined 6,593 rooms under construction across the country. Projects in the early planning stage reached at an all-time high.

Experts say Canada’s plan to increase immigration may ease some pressures in the labour market, but bigger changes are needed to ensure new permanent residents are matched with the jobs that most need filling. 

The mayor said that Bill 23 would result in a $130 million loss and leave an infrastructure funding gap.

Among other things, the council is calling on the province to modernize the residential-development approvals process and boost pathways into the skilled trades.

Rapid rises in material and labour costs show an increase in permit value of nearly 7% in 2022. Adjusted for inflation, total permit values fell by 6.6%.
