CMHC says high housing costs are restricting population mobility in the country, as Canadians are finding that it's too pricey to buy or rent in cities where they seek jobs.

The city hopes the temporary move will spur new residential development and get more homes built quickly.

The province says the new lanes will help to relieve gridlock and keep people and goods moving in the GTA.

The latest Labour Force Survey data shows increases in both industry employment (1.8%) and the labour force (2.0%) for all workers over the last 12 months.
