Construction shed 21,000 jobs in October
Statistics Canada released the findings of its monthly Labour Force Survey last week. The report shows that national employment figures held steady in October after two consecutive months of growth.
Employment across the country now stands at 19.1 million—almost no change from the month previous. On a year-over-year basis, Statistics Canada reports that employment grew by 443,000 or 2.4 percent.
Employment increased in British Columbia and Newfoundland and Labrador, but was little changed in the other provinces. Ontario’s jobs market reached 7.5 million, a drop of 0.2 percent.
Nationally, construction lost 21,000 jobs, or about 1.4 percent in October. Five provinces reported jobs losses, including Quebec and Ontario. Compared to a year ago, there is almost no change in employment across the industry.
