IO releases RFQ for further construction at Union Station
Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Metrolinx (MX) announced on October 28 that they have released a request for qualifications (RFQ) to prequalify project teams to deliver the Union Station Enhancement project.
The job forms part of the overall construction program at the country’s busiest rail station that has been ongoing for more than 10 years, and at cost now of nearly a billion dollars. In May, the two Crown-owned agencies announced another project that calls for refurbishments to the station’s tracks and platforms.
This next project will see the design and construction of transit infrastructure and implement upgrades at the southernmost part of Union Station to accommodate GO rail service increases, improve customer experiences, and enable the planned expansion of GO rail services. Specifically, the scope of work includes:
- construction of new platforms, with canopies and vertical access elements such as stairs and elevators
- construction of two new tracks designed to allow for future passenger train speed up to 45mph, with associated signal works
- construction of a new concourse area below the platforms
- storm water management system and other building systems
Construction is expected to last well into the 2020s.
Anyone interested in bidding on the Union Station Enhancement project must download the project RFQ document from MERX. The deadline for submitting qualification statements in mid-December.
