PCL Construction releases corporate social responsibility report
PCL Construction unveiled the results of its first-ever corporate social responsibility report on October 21. The document, which lists the efforts the company takes to build and operate sustainably, looks at five aspects of the company’s work: people, projects, partners, practices, and places.
“Corporate social responsibility has always been a key part of our identity,” said Dave Filipchuk, president and CEO, PCL Construction in a release. “This report shares how we incorporate sustainability into our day-to-day operations, as well as how we continually strive to develop innovative ways to become more efficient while delivering unsurpassed value for our clients.”
Under its people theme, PCL cites the work it has done on three fronts: safety, diversity and inclusion, and training and development. Specifically, in more than 22 million person hours worked in 2018, the company recorded just three lost-time incidents. In more than 50 million hours worked alongside its trade contractor partners, it recorded just 17. Both lost-time frequency rates (of 0.03 and 0.07, respectively) were well below the North American industry average of 3.6.
As part of is diversity and inclusion efforts, PCL actively seeks partners who drive innovation and who reflect the communities in which the company works. It also adopts business practices and educates employees on how to promote and support inclusivity in the workforce. Meanwhile, on the training front, the company maintains its College of Construction and Leadership Academy to develop its personnel.
Under the places theme, the report emphasizes the more than $10 million donated by the company and its employees to charitable organizations, and the tens of thousands of hours of volunteer work and service performed by its employees in 2018. Specific causes supported include the United Way, the Red Cross, as well as scholarships and student programs, veteran and military organizations, and community initiatives.
Under the projects theme, PCL emphasizes its work with its partners to deliver high-performance infrastructure projects that minimize environmental impacts. These include solar-energy projects (and the company’s Solar Center of Excellence), modular construction services, its Water Infrastructure Group, as well as its work in mass timber, building revitalization, and net-zero energy solutions.
Under the partners theme, the report reveals the work being done by the company to develop new solutions to its supply chain management practices, and to monitor jobsite conditions through real-time data capture and analytics to increase productivity and safety, and reduce carbon emissions.
Finally, under the practices theme, the report itemizes various innovations put in place on PCL jobsites to promote sustainability. These include construction waste diversion practices that have yielded diversion rates of up to 90 percent, procurement strategies to source sustainable building materials, developing a greenhouse gas inventory across all its offices and construction yards, and building a team of sustainable construction advisors who develop strategies to reduce projects’ environmental impacts.
