Cambridge to host Amazon fulfilment centre
Amazon plans to build a new distribution centre in Cambridge.
The City of Cambridge made the announcement on August 17. The e-retailing giant intends to repurpose an industrial building on 125 Maple Grove Road, turning it into a 136,000-square foot facility. Operations are expected to begin by the end of the year, creating hundreds of jobs.
“I am delighted by Amazon’s decision, and confident that our community will be a great fit for the company,” said Cambridge Mayor Kathryn McGarry. “Cambridge has a skilled workforce and is centrally located with easy access to highway 401, so it’s not surprising that Amazon has selected Cambridge as the location for its next project.”
The station will be the final stage in the delivery process to consumers. Cambridge’s proximity to Toronto and Buffalo makes the city a logical choice for the facility, the city said.
“With a labour force of more than 77,500 workers across multiple industries, along with a growing population, the City of Cambridge continues to be an attractive prospect for potential investors,” says James Goodram, Director of Economic Development. “We look forward to welcoming Amazon to Cambridge and are confident that the community impact of this new facility will be positive and timely for many residents.”
Amazon has not begun hiring at the site.
