Governments contribute $625K to Kingston affordable housing
Affordable housing in Kingston received a modest boost on July 31.
The federal and provincial governments announced an investment of $625,000 to support construction of a 40-unit, mixed-income apartment building at 27 Wright Crescent. The project will have a mix of one-bedroom, two-bedroom and bachelor units. Construction crews broke ground on the building in May, and work is expected to be completed by the fall of 2021.
Five of the units being are funded through the federal-provincial Investment in Affordable Housing Program. The program gives communities the flexibility to address their local housing needs by funding new rental construction, home repairs, housing allowances, rent supplements or home ownership.
"We know that people across Ontario are struggling to find affordable housing they need," said Steve Clark, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. "This investment in a new 40-unit community housing complex will create more homes for the people in Kingston who need it most."
This project was made possible through municipal and shared provincial/federal capital funding contributions totaling approximately $2.5 million along with a low-interest loan financing provided under the Federal National Housing Strategy.
“Affordable housing remains a top priority for City Council,” said Kingston Mayor Bryan Paterson. “The current state of the world has only reinforced how important it is that we continue to make progress on affordable housing initiatives. We are so pleased to break ground on this new project which will provide much-needed housing units in this desirable, central location, close to shopping, transit and other amenities.
