Province and Toronto moving toward historic subway expansion
The Province of Ontario and the City of Toronto have signed a “Preliminary Agreement” that should lead toward an unprecedented subway expansion project in the city. The plan is to expand and modernize the subway network across the Greater Toronto Area.
Caroline Mulroney, Ontario Minister of Transportation, said that her government “and the City of Toronto share a commitment and responsibility to build transit infrastructure quickly and efficiently to keep people moving, to drive business investment and job creation, and to improve the environment. Through this partnership, we are making historic investments in Ontario's transportation network with the new Ontario Line and three subway extensions – the largest subway expansion in Canadian history.”
Mulroney said that the governmental partners are “building a world-class transportation network and developing transit-oriented communities with a greater variety of housing options. his is part of our plan to build new transit faster so people can get where they want to go, when they want to get there.”
Toronto Mayor John Tory believes that the citizens of Toronto are eager for construction to get underway to expand the system. He said, “People want us to get on with building new transit in Toronto and upgrading our existing transit system. The signing of the preliminary Toronto-Ontario Transit Partnership Agreement is an important step in getting this work done and ensuring both governments are working in full cooperation.”
The plan calls for general modernization and upgrading of the TTC and projects including working on the Bloor-Yonge Capacity Enhancement Project; the GO Expansion/SmartTrack project; the Ontario Line; Line 2 East Expansion (a three-stop expansion into Scarborough); the Yonge North Subway Extension and Eglinton Crosstown West Extension.
