Hamilton transit task force issues recommendations
A task force created to make recommendations to the Ontario government on how to spend $1 billion in transit money made issued its report to Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney on March 16.
The five-member group was originally given a February deadline to complete its work, but that timelines was extended to the middle of this month to allow the group to develop a preliminary list of projects. The group includes Liberal MP Tony Valeri, Hamilton city manager Janette Smith and LiUNA director of government relations Anthony Primerano, former Toronto Star journalist Richard Brennan, and Saiedeh Razavi, director of the McMaster University Institute for Transportation and Logistics.
Although the Transportation Minister’s office confirmed receipt of the task force’s report, the government would not confirm when or if it would reveal any of the recommendations.
“Provincial officials will… undertake further due diligence such as identifying any commercially sensitive information," the province said in an email. "This will take place prior to any release of key outputs of the task force."
Mulroney announced the creation of the task force late last year after she announced in December that the 14-kilometre Hamilton light rail project would be cancelled.
When the project was approved in 2014, the provincial Liberal government committed $1 billion. The Conservatives confirmed their commitment to funding the project during the 2018 election, but Mulroney said at the cancellation announcement that the project price tag was approaching $5.5 billion.
