Credit River bridge contract awarded
A public-private partnership team consisting of EllisDon and Coco Paving will lead a project to rehabilitate the Credit River Bridge on Queen Elizabeth Way in Mississauga.
The team, which also includes designers AECOM, was announced as the preferred project proponent by Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Transportation on November 2.
The bridge faced an uncertain future until late last year when the province announced it would commit funds to either rehabilitate the 80-plus year-old bridge or tear it down altogether and replace it with a new structure.
In December, the government announced the bridge, which was designated a heritage structure, would be preserved, and a new bridge structure built to its north. Some 165,000 vehicles use the QEW each day.
"This is a government that listens to local communities and values their input on important projects like this," said Rudy Cuzzetto, MPP for Mississauga-Lakeshore. "At over 80 years old, this bridge needs major rehabilitation now, to ensure it remains safe for the public. However, we recognize it is both a provincially significant heritage bridge, and a symbol of the Credit River Valley, and I'm very proud of our commitment to preserve it."
The construction scope will see the team build a twin bridge to the north of the existing span. It will additionally rehabilitate the existing bridge, widen and improve the QEW, replace the Mississauga Road overpass, and reconfigure the Mississauga Road interchange.
The precise cost of the project has not yet been disclosed, but IO’s most recent market update document suggests the project could cost between $200 million and $499 million. The project is expected to reach financial close at the end of this year.
