Permit values jump in Windsor in September
Three multi-million dollar permits, including one worth $13 million, helped propel the value of building permits issued by the City of Windsor to nearly $39 million in September.
The city’s report on the value of issued permits for the month shows a total value of $38.7 million—more than double the $19 million recorded in August.
Leading the way for the month was demand in the residential sector. Permits there rose by more than $4 million to nearly $18.5 million. Demand was also strong in the government & institutional sector, where permit values rose to $15.5 million after recording just $1.6 million worth of work in August.
The city issued $4.5 million worth of commercial permits for the month, and just $352,000 worth of industrial-sector permits.
The value of construction activity also rose compared with September 2019, which recorded just over $31 million worth of work. That figure included $28 million in residential construction, $284,000 in industrial work, $1.6 million in commercial-sector work, and $785,000 in government & institutional projects.
Overall, the city issued 342 permits for the month, compared with 341 in August 2020, and 284 in September 2019.
For the year to date, construction permit totals are slightly behind last year’s pace. The first nine months of this year saw $298.8 million worth of permits issued for construction. During the same period last year, the city issued just under $302 million.
The largest-value permit issued by the city in September 2020 was for $13 million—for the construction of a 35,000-square foot addition to the former Mercer Street Public School building on 1167 Mercer Street.
A further permit for $3.5 million was issued for renovation work at 3355 Munich Court, where the building will be converted from a manufacturing facility to a new business operation.
The third large-value permit was issued for $1.5 million for the construction of a 1,500-square foot battery building on Broadway Street.
