London, EllisDon proceed with construction of affordable housing development
The City of London has awarded a contract worth $17.5 million to EllisDon for construction for an affordable housing development on Baseline Road West.
The plans for the apartment building, which will be owned by Housing Development Corporation, London, have now been submitted for a building permit. The building itself will be built using pre-fabricated panels and other components that will be assembled on site to speed up delivery.
The building, which is required to have occupancy by December 31, 2021, will be four-stories with 61 apartments. It will also have outdoor amenity areas and 61 parking spaces. Preparation of the property is underway.
“We’re excited to see the project moving forward at the 122 Baseline Road West development and to have a trusted partner like London’s own EllisDon onsite to bring these new homes to London,” said Mayor Ed Holder. “Safe and affordable housing is a right for everyone and it is a top priority for our Council. Initiatives like this promote greater dignity for individuals, and greater economic prosperity for our communities.”
“This important project hits close to home for EllisDon, as our roots started in London, Ontario,” said EllisDon’s director of pre-construction, Mike Stewart. “We are honoured to provide affordable housing for the city where we live, and continue to build in.”
This site was approved with funding support from all levels of government, including $7.5 million through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s Rapid Housing Initiative.
Municipal contributions worth a combined $7.4 million have come from the City of London and Housing Development Corporation, and include funding, surplus land and planning, and expedited processes that support urgent affordable housing development.
The 122 Baseline Road West site is located on the north side of Baseline Road West, east of Cotswold Gate, west of Wharncliffe Road South and north of Commissioners Road West.
