Feds, province announce broadband project funding for Niagara Region
The federal and provincial governments will each invest up to $4.4 million in projects that will deliver broadband internet technology to more than 5,600 homes and businesses across Niagara Region.
The governments announced the signing of the contracts on January 27. The contracts were awarded by Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT) Inc, a not-for-profit corporation initiated by local municipalities to address connectivity in Southwestern Ontario.
"Now more than ever, high speed internet access is essential for all Canadians – no matter where they live," said Vance Badawey, Member of Parliament for Niagara Centre. "This SWIFT project will bring broadband service to nearly 5,629 underserved households and businesses here in the Niagara Region, and ensures that residents can better connect to their work, online learning, healthcare services, and stay in touch with family, friends, and loved ones."
Construction of the infrastructure network is expected to be up and running with service expected to start through the second half of 2022. These projects are valued at a combined $21.2 million.
"Increasing access to reliable broadband service is at the forefront of our province's economic recovery and is critical to ensuring the long-term sustainability of our rural communities," said David Mayberry, SWIFT Board Chair. "Today's newly announced investment in fibre-optic broadband will bring increased employment opportunities and significant economic benefits to the Niagara Region."
Work continues to bridge the gaps in broadband access in Southwestern Ontario, as part of a combined federal-provincial investment of more than $191 million to bring fast, reliable and affordable internet to thousands of homes and businesses. This will allow communities to attract new development, strengthen local economies and create more well-paying jobs and opportunities in rural Ontario.
