Fanshawe launches Skills2Build program
Fanshawe College has launched a new skills-development program aimed at helping people find jobs in the construction industry.
Through its Corporate Training Solutions, the college has launched its Skills2Build – General Construction program that aims to generate employment opportunities with local employers and fill employment gaps within the industry. The program is being offered at no cost to Ontarians 18 or older and who are unemployed, precariously employed or employed with low household income.
The first phase of the program begins on June 7, and consists of six weeks of online and in-person training to cover soft and technical skills. In the second phase, students will be paired with a local employer to complete a six-week full time, paid work placement. Positions could include general labourer, swimming pool installation, carpentry and more. Phase three involves follow up with participants to support their retraining skills to ensure employment success in their chosen field.
"This program is a win-win for everyone. It not only provides the training skilled workers need in the construction sector to hit the ground running, but also gives employers an opportunity to engage graduates in a paid work placement to help fill employment gaps," said Candace Miller, the senior manager, strategic initiatives and business development at Fanshawe. “We thank our government partners for their ongoing support.”
“There are tremendous opportunities for skilled workers in our construction sector,” added Monte McNaughton, Ontario’s Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development. “By supporting programs like this, our government is helping people get the skills they need to land good, meaningful jobs and embark on rewarding careers.”
Construction employers who participate in the program may be eligible for supports of up to $1,000 per placement.
Fanshawe is encouraging anyone who wants to learn more about the program or about hosting a placement to contact cts@fanshawec.ca and reference the Skills2Build General Construction program.
