Governments fund construction of Kitchener aquatic centre
The federal and provincial governments have announced more than $17 million in funding to build a new aquatic centre in Kitchener.
The governments announced the funding on May 18, and the money will be supplemented by an investment of more than $6.5 million from the City of Kitchener.
The project scope of work calls for construction of the centre at RBJ Schlegel Park in southwest Kitchener. The building will include an eight-lane, 25-metre long pool with a removable floor and ramp access, bleacher seating, community use multi-purpose rooms, public washrooms, and food and beverage services.
"Southwest Kitchener is the fastest growing area in our region, and is expected to double in population by 2041,” said Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. “Today’s funding announcement will support the residents and visitors of this growing community with additional recreational facilities for many years to come."
"This announcement is great news for the growing number of families and individuals who are calling Southwest Kitchener home,” added Kitchener—Conestoga MPP Mike Harris. “Soon, they will have access to a brand new pool and community facility right in their neighbourhood. I am pleased that this provincially nominated project is moving forward with support from all levels of government and look forward to seeing local residents enjoy the RBJ Schlegel Aquatic Centre in the near future."
Construction on the facility is expected to be completed by 2025.
A name for the facility has not yet been chosen.
