Three more Ontario contractors named among Canada’s Best Managed
Deloitte Canada’s annual round-up of the country’s best-managed companies includes several new entrants from the construction sector, three of which are based in Ontario.
The 2021 edition of the list, which celebrates the achievements of the country’s top privately-owned companies with annual revenues over $25 million, includes 37 new winners, including Priestly Demolition Inc. from King, Ontario, State Window Corporation from Vaughan, and M.P. Lundy Construction from Ottawa.
“We are thrilled to be part of this prestigious group,” said Sean Lundy, CEO of M.P. Lundy. “It takes an exemplary combination of talent to achieve such a distinction, and I am so proud of the Lundy team for getting us to this milestone - particularly during this year of unprecedented change.”
With the addition of this year’s entrants, the Best Managed program now includes 486 companies. Their achievements, said Deloitte, are even more impressive this year, given the challenges thrown at them by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“In what may be the most challenging year for Canadian businesses since the program’s inception, the 2021 Best Managed winners are a shining example of the importance of leadership, innovation, and resilience in the face of uncertainty,” said Kari Lockhart, national co-leader of the Canada's Best Managed Companies program. “These companies should not only be extremely proud of this designation, but for their organizational grit, continued adaptability, and unwavering commitment to their people during a year when it was needed most.”
Of particular importance for the Best Managed program this year was companies’ commitment to the health and well-being of their people. Ensuring employees feel valued, enabling remote work environments and giving employees the confidence to feel safe were hallmarks of those companies identified on the list.
“One area we’ve seen that’s different than in previous years is how companies view employee well-being, including mental health,” said Dino Medves, senior vice president and head, CIBC Commercial Banking. “Simply focusing on the bottom line is no longer a staple for success. Instead, we’re seeing Best Managed winners—past and present—adapt quickly to a new working environment, while fostering creativity and innovation united in their companies’ purpose. This year’s companies should take pride in being at the forefront of this positive change.”
The construction sector is well represented among those firms recognized for their long-standing history on the Best Managed list. Among those Ontario-based companies that have retained their standing on the list for three years are Mattamy Homes, mform Construction Group, Naylor Building Partnerships, and Techo-Bloc Inc.
A number of other firms have also been recognized as Gold Standard winners that have retained their standing for between four and six years, and Platinum Club members that have retained their standing for at least seven years. Those groups include Chandos Construction, DIALOG, DPI Construction Management, Raymond General Contractors, Maple Reinders, M. Sullivan & Son Limited, Modern Niagara Group Inc., PCL Construction Group of Companies, Pomerleau Inc. and Grascan Construction Ltd.
