CBTU hails mobility tax deduction for trades workers
Canada’s Building Trades Unions (CBTU) are applauding an announcement in the federal budget that allows for a labour mobility tax deduction for tradespeople.
The budget, released on April 7, proposes to introduce a labour mobility deduction that would provide tax recognition on up to $4,000 per year in eligible travel and temporary relocation expenses to eligible tradespersons and apprentices.
“On behalf of the 600,000 members of Canada’s Building Trades Unions, we applaud the Federal Government for including a Labour Mobility Deduction for Tradespeople in Budget 2022,” said CBTU executive director Sean Strickland. “This policy change creates real support in the pockets of all construction workers across Canada.”
CBTU has long advocated for a tax credit to support those workers that move across jurisdictions to work. Mobility of this sort is a part of the solution to help alleviate the labour imbalances that exist within the construction kabour force.
“We commend all political parties for recognizing the important role skilled trades workers play in our society and for supporting them through this tax deduction,” Strickland said.
CBTU is also praising the doubling of the Union Training and Innovation program. It calls the program, “a crucial commitment to continuing to develop and grow Canada’s skilled trades workforce.”
Budget 2022 provides $84.2 million over the next four years for the program.
