IBI Group co-founder passes away
Ewen Fisher, one of the nine founders of IBI Group, has passed away.
Originally from Toronto, Fisher graduated from the University of Toronto in 1958 with a degree in civil engineering. He later completed his master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Illinois.
He was among the group that launched IBI Group in November 1974, and was instrumental in shaping the culture and values of the firm. IBI Group today is among the world’s largest architecture/engineering firms with more than 60 offices worldwide, and more than 2,400 employees.
Fisher was instrumental in the firm’s growth in western Canada in particular, through his work on some of the firm’s first projects, including the Calgary International Airport, the Alberta Urban Hospitals program and the Calgary LRT.
His early collaborations with fellow founders on projects such as the Lady Minto Hospital in Cochrane, Ontario helped to establish the firm’s expertise in the public and private sectors—many of which continue to work with IBI Group.
Fisher returned to Toronto later in his career, lending his engineering and project management skills led to the successful completion of several of IBI Group’s most notable projects, including downtown Toronto’s Liberty Village, and the Windsor Station — Bell Centre in Montreal.
“Ewen’s legacy as a consummate professional and kind colleague will continue to live on as a founding member of IBI Group. While we mourn the loss of one of our leaders, we feel confident in continuing on the path he has helped to shape,” said IBI Group CEO, Scott Stewart.
Fisher was 86.
