Ball Construction awarded $27M contract for Wellesley rec centre
The Township of Wellesley has awarded the contract to build its new recreation facility to Ball Construction.
Council announced the project award on December 14. Ball was among five companies the town pre-qualified for the work in the summer. The company’s bid was $27.2 million.
The project scope of work includes a single pad ice rink, walking track, eight dressing rooms (two of which will be fully accessible), Junior “C” dressing room, storage for community groups, a youth centre, senior centre, gymnasium that would service as a community centre as well, commercial kitchen, skate park, multi-use court, active outdoor play centre, meeting rooms, fitness rooms, two soccer fields and an outdoor walking trail.
“This world-class facility is the next step in building spaces for our community to connect, grow and gather and will complement the existing recreation facilities throughout the township,” said Mayor Joe Nowak.
“Awarding this contract means we can get shovels in the ground in just a few months, and make this dream a reality,” added Chris Martin, Wellesley Township Recreation Centre Advisory Committee Chair.
The project groundbreaking is planned for March, with completion of the complex estimated to be late summer or fall of 2023.
In June of last year, the provincial government announced it would contribute $16.1 million to the project’s construction budget.
