Maple Reinders, Bird joint venture selected for Barrie wastewater IPD project
A joint-venture between Maple Reinders and Bird Construction has been awarded the contract to build Barrie’s new wastewater treatment facility.
The project, which is valued at $125 million, will be delivered under an integrated project delivery (IPD) model, and will be the largest and most comprehensive wastewater IPD project performed in the country.
"Maple Reinders is pleased to continue its legacy of flexibility in project delivery, and open and transparent, 'partner-based' approach to project realization," said Maple Reinders' Vice-President of Major Projects, Reuben Scholtens. "We have extensive experience with this asset type and this partner and are confident that this project will achieve the targets set for by the City of Barrie.”
The project is expected to take approximately eight years to complete. Its scope of work includes advanced nutrient removal solution for the existing plant, plans for the expansion of the facility to 96 megalitres per day, digester capacity expansion, peak flow attenuation facility, a new hydro substation and other critical features.
The improvements are being made to ensure optimal design and delivery of wastewater services for the City of Barrie, while accommodating growth.
The project will be managed as a design and construction program combining a series of distinct, interdependent projects that will be delivered in a coordinated and sequenced approach.
Use of the IPD delivery model is growing in popularity in the infrastructure sector and is particularly well-suited for projects where a high degree of trust and transparency is required between the owner and project partners, and where multiple projects need to happen simultaneously.
"Over the past several years, we have been awarded a number of wastewater projects under this contracting method, and we look forward to bringing our technical and project execution expertise to the City of Barrie," said Teri McKibbon, President and CEO of Bird. “This project contributes to our expanding portfolio and reach in Ontario and reflects our discipline and diligence in providing a highly regarded client service approach that positions us to continue to build long-term shareholder value."
