Hamilton council gives go-ahead to Block 16 tower
Hamilton City Council has given the green light to construction of a massive housing tower on the city’s waterfront.
Located in the proposed Pier 8 development, Block 16 will be a 45-storey tower with approximately 429 residential units. The broader project calls for the conversion of Pier 8 into its own waterfront community, with as many as 1,500 residential units and 13,000 square metres of commercial and institutional space.
"With this landmark approval, Hamilton is well on its way to become a world-class waterfront city and we are proud to be one crucial step forward in making this a reality,” said Joe Valela, Founder and Principal of Tercot Communities. "As the days come, we will review next steps with the City of Hamilton and work together to see how the project will evolve.”
Designed by Bruce Kuwabara, founder of KPMB Architects, the development is set to be a new anchor for the waterfront.
In addition to the tower, the approval includes public art opportunities and new public spaces, including a publicly accessible look-out terrace. These new spaces will contribute to and enhance the broader Pier 8 complete community and the City of Hamilton as a whole.
As part of the council decision, the development team will also work with the city to meet net zero carbon building design standards.
