Oshawa sets new building permit record in ‘22
The City of Oshawa issued more than $900 million worth of building permits in 2022 – its highest-ever volume.
The city announced the news at the end of January. Last year’s total beats the previous building permit record of $614 million set in 2017. Along the way, it also set two dozen other records, including the highest total residential construction value issued in any one year ($762 million), and the highest value issued in any one month (August: $261,860,700)
“This incredible year of construction reflects a rapid pace of investment and economic growth across the City of Oshawa,” said Mayor Dan Carter. “We’ve seen billions of dollars invested in recent years and thousands of new jobs created from major international companies which is further positioning Oshawa as one of the best places to live, learn, work and invest.”
The city has enjoyed a remarkable run of development activity in recent years. Between 2018 and 2022, it issued more than $250 million in industrial building permits and more than $2.7 billion in total building permit values.
The city is now looking to encourage development at its Northwood Business Park, where approximately 500 acres of land is available for commercial usage.
Oshawa has kept monthly building records since 1965, while yearly records date back to 1964.
