Enbridge gets provincial go-ahead to build Chatham-Kent RNG project
Enbridge Gas has been given the green light to build a renewable natural gas (RNG) project in Southwestern Ontario.
The company announced earlier this month that it has received approval from the Ontario Energy Board to build its Ridge Landfill RNG Project in Chatham-Kent. The company has called the project is “a major milestone on the path to net zero.”
Pending the receipt of required permits, Waste Connections of Canada will build the facility at the Ridge Landfill site near the community of Blenheim. The facility will upgrade the landfill gas to low-carbon RNG at a quality suitable for introduction into the Enbridge Gas natural gas network.
Enbridge Gas will also build a new injection station and 5.7-kilometre pipeline to deliver the RNG product from the landfill site into the natural gas distribution system at an existing Enbridge Gas station on Communication Road.
“The approval of the Ridge Landfill RNG Project in Chatham-Kent marks a significant stride towards a sustainable future,” said Chatham-Kent-Leamington MPP Trevor Jones. “With the construction of a renewable natural gas pipeline facility, we not only propel our net-zero emissions goals, but also foster job creation.”
The project is valued at more than $70 million. It will helps to offset approximately 110,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per year – the equivalent of taking almost 24,000 passenger vehicles off the road. An estimated 50 development and construction jobs and several highly skilled permanent operational jobs are also expected.
Construction on the pipeline and its related facilities is scheduled to begin this month. Construction work at the Ridge Landfill site is expected to begin in August 2023, and the project is anticipated to be in-service by the end of 2024.
