Aecon earns silver designation for performance in Indigenous relations
Aecon has announced that it has achieved Silver Certification in Progressive Aboriginal Relations (PAR) from the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB).
The PAR certification program confirms corporate performance in Indigenous relations through an independent process that verifies working relationships with Indigenous businesses and communities.
“Aecon is proud to receive this certification, demonstrating our progress in continuously working collaboratively with Indigenous Peoples to advance reconciliation, economic development and wealth creation,” said Jean-Louis Servranckx, President and CEO, Aecon.
More than 200 companies participate in the PAR certification program. Aecon is one of four that has been recognized at the silver level this year. Several other construction companies, including Bird, EllisDon, Black & McDonald, E.S. Fox, The Miller Group, Pomerleau, and Sullivan also earned either Bronze or Committed status on the PAR list.
“We are proud that a growing number of companies have committed to working collaboratively across cultures for progressive Indigenous relations,” said CCAB President & CEO Tabatha Bull. “This dedication advances economic reconciliation by providing opportunities for the employment of Indigenous peoples into all levels of positions, including leadership and executive opportunities. It also promotes the involvement of Indigenous companies in their supply chains and creates partnerships with Indigenous communities for a stronger Canadian economy.”
The designation means Aecon has demonstrated its Indigenous business plan through its established Indigenous business partnerships, active contributions of Indigenous Peoples across its workplace, and investments in communities and people to support a sustainable future.
The program includes an online management and reporting program that tracks four performance areas: leadership actions, employment, business development, and community relationships. These reports are then reviewed by an independent jury of Indigenous business leaders who assign the final bronze, silver or gold certification level.
“Developing and fostering long-lasting, respectful relationships and supporting economic development within Indigenous communities have long been key focus areas for Aecon and will remain paramount to our continued reconciliation efforts,” said Aecon’s Vice President, Indigenous Relations John Bonin. “This certification serves as a path forward to truly make a difference in the economic prosperity and lives of Indigenous Peoples and communities.”
Aecon released its inaugural Reconciliation Action Plan in September 2022. The plan serving as the blueprint for how the company intends to continue to engage and partner with Indigenous Peoples, communities, businesses, and organizations to advance reconciliation.
The CCAB founded its PAR program in 2001. Those companies that earn certification are confirmed as being good business partners, great places to work, and committed to prosperity in Indigenous communities.
