New Old Elm GO Station opens in Stouffville
Construction work is now complete on the new Old Elm GO Station.
Located at 12958 Tenth Line in the Town of Stouffville, the new station replaces the previous station on Bethesda Road, which is adjacent to the layover facility where Metrolinx stores and maintains GO trains.
The new and improved station provides customers with modern station amenities including more convenient access to the station and platforms, additional vehicle and bike parking, an improved and integrated bus loop, heated shelters, and a covered platform.
“As Ontario’s population grows, our government is focused on delivering better and faster public transit to keep commuters and our economy moving,” said Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria. “With the new and improved Old Elm GO Station, we’ve officially completed three major GO station improvement projects along the Stouffville Line in just the last month, proof that we’re getting it done for the people of York Region.”
The new Old Elm GO Station includes a new passenger pick-up and drop-off area, a designated waiting area, more than 670 vehicle parking spaces and enhanced cycling amenities. Customers can also access new heated shelters, a new platform with an advanced snow-melting system and a bus loop to better connect GO Transit customers with more transit options.
The station was officially renamed Old Elm GO Station in 2021 to acknowledge the historic 200-year-old elm tree on the site of the relocated station.
“These upgrades to the Old Elm GO station demonstrate our government’s commitment to getting Ontarians where they need to be, reliably and effectively,” said Paul Calandra, MPP for Markham—Stouffville. “Improvements to our transit network like this one will prepare our community as our province grows at an unprecedented speed.”
Upon completion of the GO Expansion work along the Stouffville Line, future travel times between Old Elm and Union Station is expected to be reduced by more than 30 minutes.
"This project is part of the larger GO Expansion Program, and one of a series of recent investments along the Stouffville Line to enable future service increases,” said Metrolinx President and CEO Phil Verster. “The new, re-located Old Elm GO Station provides our customers with enhanced accessibility features and better amenities, including heated shelters, bike racks, passenger pick-up and drop-off, designated waiting area, signalized entry into and out of the station, and even a shorter train trip."
GO rail will become one of the busiest railways in North America with more than 200 million annual riders expected by 2055.
