Windsor marks completion of Cabana Road West reconstruction
The City of Windsor is celebrating the completion of reconstruction work on Cabana Road West.
The work, which began in 2015, involved widening Cabana Road West to four traffic lanes — two in each direction — from Provincial Road to Highway 3. It included replacing sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and street lighting; and adding new dedicated bicycle lanes that will be separated from motor vehicle traffic by a half-metre painted buffer zone in each direction. Enhanced boulevard restoration with sodding and tree planting was also part of the corridor improvement work.
“Today we celebrate the completion of construction on Cabana Road West from Provincial Road to Highway 3, a key milestone in our commitment to building Windsor’s future,” said Mayor Drew Dilkens. “It is critically important that we continue to invest in Windsor’s record economic growth and make it translate to more jobs and more opportunities for all residents. This vital east-west transportation corridor in South Windsor will provide a direct link with a new acute care hospital as well as new employment and residential development off Country Road 42.”
The work was sequenced over four phases. Work on phases three and four are expected to be completed by the end of 2024. So far, the total expenditure for the first four phases is approximately $45 million. The City of Windsor has invested $43.1 million in the project, with additional funding support coming from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.
A fifth and final stage of the project, covering Cabana Road East from Walker Road to Provincial Road, is currently planned to be tendered for the 2025 construction season.
Windsor’s 10-year capital plan will invest a total of $568.8 million in roads and $470.6 million toward upgrading the city’s sewers.
