Sudbury kicks off downtown redevelopment with Ledo Hotel demolition
The City of Greater Sudbury has started work on a key phase of its downtown south redevelopment project.
The demolition of the former Ledo Hotel at 300 Elgin Street started on January 8 and is expected to take four weeks to complete.
The property is one of a number that was acquired by the City to advance redevelopment in the region. The historic investment is an important step as City Council considers a new build or a refurbished arena in the downtown.
The demolition of surrounding buildings in the same block will follow soon after the completion of the Ledo demolition.
The city says it is committed to making its downtown renewal project happen, adding that includes either a new or refurbished arena downtown.
Council will receive the next update on the event centre project in March. That presentation is expected to detail the results of the analysis on the current Sudbury Community Arena, and a recommended process and timeline for the design and construction of a renovated facility as part of the redevelopment of the downtown south district.
The report will also recommend a process, and a budget, to build and open a new facility in 2027 or 2028, and evaluations and financing plans for both options.
