Federal government investing in youth internship in Northwestern Ontario
The Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario (FedNor) is investment of $379,500 in youth internship opportunities in Northwestern Ontario. FedNor’s investment will support 24 placements over a three-year period.
The funding will support the Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre (NOIC) in delivering their Youth Effect Program, which provides learning opportunities for youth by matching them with subject matter experts to work on innovative projects through 15-week placements. As part of the Youth Effect Program, NOIC works directly with local experts to create strategic matches with youth based on interests and skills. Participating youth and organizations must be physically located in Northwestern Ontario.
Through the 24 placements, this investment will help develop specialized skills and knowledge for youth in the region, according to a federal government press release. Additional anticipated benefits include the maintenance of critical strategic alliances in Northwestern Ontario, and the development of regional businesses, products, processes, services, and/or technologies.
“These internships will provide a fair chance for young people in Northern Ontario to develop their skills and fully participate in our economy,” said Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services and Minister responsible for FedNor, and Member of Parliament for Thunder Bay—Superior North. “This is part of our plan to grow an economy in our region that works for every generation, so that young people can grow up in Northern Ontario with equitable opportunities.”
