Ottawa Community Housing development receives $57.7 million in HAF funding
The City of Ottawa last month announced a $57.7 million investment in Ottawa Community Housing’s Gladstone Village development.
This funding is part of the broader $176.3 million that was allocated to the City of Ottawa through the Housing Accelerator Fund, a federal initiative aimed at supporting the creation of affordable housing across the country.
Gladstone Village is located in Ottawa Centre on an eight-acre parcel of land between Somerset Street to the north, the O-Train Trillium Line to the east, Preston Street to the west, and Oak Street to the south. Its central location provides convenient access to public transportation, local businesses, and essential services, making it an ideal site for sustainable, affordable urban living.
The first phase of the development will deliver 336 new affordable homes with a blend of housing options, including mid-rise residential buildings and low-rise townhomes, with an emphasis on modern amenities, energy efficiency, and community-focused features, creating spaces that support a sense of belonging and connection for residents
“Gladstone Village is a game changer for Ottawa,” said Mayor Mark Sutcliffe. “With over $57 million from the federal government’s Housing Accelerator Fund and an additional $9 million in municipal support, Phase 1 of Gladstone Village will deliver 336 new, affordable homes for Ottawa families. These investments demonstrate our commitment to making housing more affordable in our city, and I want to thank our federal colleagues for their continued support in building safe, affordable housing in Ottawa.”
Gladstone Village addresses a significant need in the Ottawa rental market by offering homes at average or below-average market prices.
The overall development will be a progressive build of mixed-use (residential/retail/office), mixed-income (affordable and market rental), and mixed-density (low-, mid-, and high-rise) properties.
The subdivision will include new streets, sidewalks, multi-use pathways, infrastructure, servicing, and parcels that will be built out in phases over the coming decade.
It is anticipated that the first phase of the Gladstone Village development will generate 375 million in economic growth and create 1,800 jobs.
The buildings will be built to Passive Housing Standards, while Gladstone Village itself is set to be district energy ready. It will include high-efficiency heating, cooling and wastewater heat recovery systems.
