NCC selects Motion design for Alexandra Bridge replacement
The National Capital Commission has chosen a design concept for the replacement of a century-old bridge that links Ottawa and Gatineau.
The NCC’s preferred concept for the bridge is called “Motion.” The design was one of three finalists that was revealed in October. The choice was based on a recommendation from a joint project team, and was approved by a unanimous vote at the NCC board meeting last week.
The NCC says the Motion concept is inspired by nature and particularly the eel, which is native to the Ottawa River.
Next steps will see refinements to the concept design to integrate, where possible, elements of the other concepts that were identified or supported through the public consultations and engagement activities.
This refinement will also serve to address challenges and opportunities identified during the evaluation process.
Meanwhile, the integrated project team, which includes representatives from Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC), the NCC and the technical advisor Arup Canada Inc., will continue to engage with the public, Indigenous communities and other stakeholders to advance the progressive design-build procurement process.
The Alexandra Bridge turns 124 this year and has reached the end of its service life and is due for replacement.
The Government of Canada directed that the bridge be replaced to make sure the crossing can service transportation needs well into the future. Ongoing repairs will allow it to remain in use until the start of construction in 2028.
PSPC is responsible for the management of the Alexandra Bridge, with the NCC acting as partner.
Construction of the new bridge is expected to last between 2028 and 2032.
