Peel Region earns $5M in grants for energy upgrades to two water plants
Peel Region has secured grants worth just under $5.2 million from Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator for energy-related upgrades to two water plants.
The G.E. Booth Water Resource Recovery Facility will receive $2.39 million to upgrade aeration blowers and implement a more energy-efficient ammonia-based aeration control (ABAC) process.
The project is expected to save 12,000 MWh of electricity annually, equivalent to reducing 456 tonnes of GHG emissions and saving $1.3 million in electricity costs each year.
Meanwhile, the Clarkson Water Resource Recovery Facility will benefit from a $2.8 million grant for a cogeneration project that will recover energy from waste gas and an ABAC upgrade for the aeration system.
This initiative is projected to save 14,165 MWh annually, cutting 538 tonnes of GHG emissions and reducing electricity costs by $1.8 million yearly.
“The G.E. Booth and Clarkson Water Resource Recovery facilities are essential infrastructure in Peel Region,” says Peel Region’s Commissioner of Public Works Kealy Dedman. “These energy recovery and energy conservation grants from the Independent Electricity System Operator will be used to continue innovative work at these facilities that will help reduce future GHG emissions.”
Both projects are anticipated to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2026.
