Brampton courthouse work completed
The Ontario government has announced that construction work is officially complete on the expansion of the Brampton courthouse.
The second phase of project, which began in 2021, was conducted under a public-private partnership by a team led by Pomerleau. Construction wrapped up in December.
Phase 1 of the work involved the construction of a six-floor addition, and fit-out of the basement and floors 1 and 2. The second phase involved the fit-out of the remaining shelled floors of the addition, as well as the partial renovation of the existing courthouse and adjacent Land Registry building.
The government’s $117-million investment in the expansion includes:
- six additional floors with 18 additional hearing rooms: 13 courtrooms, three settlement conference spaces and two pre-trial rooms for the Superior Court of Justice and Ontario Court of Justice,
- upgraded security features, including courtrooms built for trials involving multiple accused persons and remote testimony spaces, and
- improved accessibility spaces such as barrier-free witness stands and specialized seating for jury members.
“A larger, more secure and accessible courthouse will address the growing needs of Peel Region and connect more people to critical court services, quickly and efficiently,” said Attorney General Doug Downey. “This new accessible space is not only thoughtful in its design, but is also a true reflection of positive transformation in our justice system.”
The A. Grenville and William Davis Courthouse in Brampton is the busiest courthouse in the province. In 2022–2023, it handled approximately 15,000 criminal cases, 4,100 family cases, 4,000 civil cases, and 5,000 small-claims cases.
